GOOD SHOW, OLD CHAPS!

In a show of good taste rarely seen in the last three or four decades, our cousins across the pond in Old Blighty have sent History's Most Perfect Musical Performance to number three on the U.K. Pop Single charts, according to this here article in the L.A. Times. Sure, one could argue that this represents less an act of respect for greatness and more one of eminently justifiable contempt for Simon Cowell and his diabolical puppets, but by God, it still counts! Congratulations to these great Minnesotans, who can next be seen on our shores January 15th in Anaheim, CA at friend of the blog Deke Dickerson's Guitar Geek Festival. If you're in the Pacific Time Zone or can get to the Pacific time zone by then, you'd be a chump not to attend!

Hello, Uncle Daddy (MP3)

Parrish Brothers - Hello, Uncle Daddy

This sordid record (but, really, it's not nearly as warped as the title suggests) goes out to Uncle Daddy & The Kissin' Cousins, Atlanta's own hillbilly jug band.

They may be hillbillies, but that doesn't mean they're without a Facebook page.

Jed Clampett On The Doubleneck Guitar

Speaking of CBS (Country Broadcasting System) here's an insane clip I've been meaning to put up ever since my pal Jerry hipped me to it a day or so ago. That's some kind of stringbending style Jed's got on that doubleneck Danelectro! Someone sign him up for Deke Dickerson's Guitar Geek Festival!

Hey Ba Ba Re Bob mystery (MP3)

Unknown - Hey Ba Ba Re Bob (3:10)

A bit earlier this week, a friend sent me this MP3 in hopes of solving the mystery of who, exactly, made this record. The disc features an unidentified artist or band offering a decidedly smutty version of Lionel Hampton's colossal 1946 hit Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bob.

The question is: who the heck is the mystery artist? The Maddox Brothers minus Rose is one guess that's materialized. I have no idea. How about you?

Fannie Mae!

Here's another overlooked masterpiece from Booker T. and the MG's. Yeah, I called it a "masterpiece".
"But", you protest, "it's just a simple 12 bar blues workout!" Then I say it sure is, and it's better than anything the Beatles ever did, and then we either agree to disagree or the whole thing escalates into physical violence.
This version of Buster Brown's "Fannie Mae" was originally on the flipside of "Mo' Onions" and was later pulled in favor of "Tic Tac Toe", a move that to my mind is a little like trading Sandy Koufax in his prime for Pedro Martinez in his. Anyhow, this "Fannie Mae" is slower and a little more loping and dirty than the (also great) different take issued on the Stax CD Soul Men, a collection of covers of hits which you should go get right now if you don't already have it, it's got killer versions of Harlem Shuffle, Day Tripper and Baby, Scratch My Back, among other gems.
Steve Cropper's solo here says pretty much everything that needs to be said, and he only takes one time thru the changes to say it. So, in all its scratchy glory, direct from the 45 RPM record to your home typewriter, here it is:

The Desperate Hours

Surely, this is the most profoundly disturbing publicity photo ever taken to promote a Humphrey Bogart movie. I have, understandably, been forbidden to hang this unsettling picture on the wall in my house.

Listen To The Voices

Another album that blew my mind this year is Sly Stone In The Studio 1965-1970.  This record is the second volume from Ace Records chronicling the Stone Family's earliest recordings as well as outside collaborations with the Beau Brummels, Joe Hicks and his sisters, Vaetta and Tiny.

Snuff Dipper (MP3)

Malcolm Miller - Snuff Dipper (2:33)

I don't know about anyone else, but whenever I see an actual street address, as opposed, say, to a Post Office box, listed on a record label that put out something really odd or exciting, I sometimes cannot resist going to Google maps to check to see if a "street view" photo is available. So many weird records came from labels set up in small, unassuming houses in very normal looking neighborhoods. Below is the Hunstville, Alabama house from which Snuff Dipper emerged.

It's a Kay Martin Christmas!

Kay Martin was a model during the 60's. She eventually became a night club singer/entertainer and released a few albums of the "risque" variety. Please enjoy the memorabilia pictured above while you listen to her xmas album classic; I Know What He Wants for Christmas...But I Don't Know How to Wrap it!

While in Reno, stay at the Kay Martin Lodge.

Up Up and Away!

Today in the WFMU parking lot Station Manager Ken is planning to soar into the freeform stratosphere while strapped to his favorite lawn chair. (In case you were wondering, this is how the greatest listener supported radio station in the world raises money.) A consortium of scientists and intelligent chimps have determined that it will take 180 balloons to get Ken airborne. For every thousand bucks pledged we'll attach one helium balloon to Ken's chair. Cabbage pledged towards FMU naturally goes towards powering your favorite Number One Ichiban Rock 'n' Soul blogstream as well, so let's get with it and 1) get Ken airborne, 2) keep FMU and this blogstream up and running and 3) get stuff in the mail! Pledge here, check out the wild swag here and, oh yeah--today is also 85 years since Sammy Davis, Jr. popped onto the scene!

What could posibly go wrong??

Little Old Wine Drinker Me (MP3)

Robert Mitchum - Little Old Wine Drinker Me

Having left his mid 1950s calypso career behind him, Robert Mitchum resurfaced as a recording artist with this fine 1967 country effort.

Mind Over Matter

What are some of your favorite albums of 2010?  This one makes my list.

Reigning Sound - Mind Over Matter  (mp3)

Schoolgirls, Airplanes, and Motor Vehicle Operators

This ditty has been re-used, re-written, and ripped off for good and ill, which is as it should be. Everything good is a rip-off of something else. But the first Sonny Boy Williamson (John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, not to be confused with Sonny Boy Williamson II, aka Sonny Boy Williamson Too, Sonny Boy Williamson Also, or Rice Miller; more on him here) is generally credited with inventing it. And maybe he did. I don't claim any scholarly high ground here. If you can read enough Document Records liner notes to figure it out without killing yourself, then god bless you.

"Good Morning Little School Girl" was popular enough that one of its verses, the one about getting an airplane and flying it all over your town, was given its own franchise with "Airplane Blues".

And then Memphis Minnie gave it new lyrics and had a big old hit with "Me and My Chauffeur Blues".  Fittingly, Chuck Berry, no slouch when it comes to songs about schoolgirls, automobiles and occasionally even airplanes, re-shaped it into "I Want To Be Your Driver", one of his many criminally under-rated mid 60's recordings.
So here are those and others, as always presented in the scratchiest fidelity available for your responsible home use as consenting adults.

Sonny Boy Williamson - Good Morning Little School Girl
Sleepy John Estes - Airplane Blues
Blind Boy Fuller - Flyin' Airplane Blues
Memphis Minnie - Me And My Chauffeur Blues (1941)
Muddy Waters - Good Morning School Girl
Nina Simone - Chauffeur
Memphis Minnie (w/Little Walter!) - Me And My Chauffeur Blues (1952)
Junior Wells & "Friendly Chap" - Good Morning Schoolgirl
Lattie Murrell - Good Morning Little School Girl
Mississippi Fred McDowell - Good Morning Little School Girl
Chuck Berry - I Want To Be Your Driver
Larry Williams - Little School Girl

Thanks to Andy Maltz for putting on his pants and leaving the house to loan me some of these recordings, and to Robert Crumb (in advance) for not suing us for using his Sleepy John Estes drawing.
